3 tips to get started training your deaf dog

Your deaf dog is not difficult, and teaching your dog is not difficult either. There are small differences in how we can communicate with a deaf dog versus a hearing dog.

  1. Begin by teaching a hand signal like “thumbs up” as a marker that always predicts something good for your pup. This hand signal is a promise that you will give them a treat/toy/favorite thing or activity and is the foundation for building desirable behaviors.

  2. Help your deaf dog feel safe by building positive experiences when they’re startled or woken up. Our deaf dogs cannot hear our approach like hearing dogs and may be alarmed when someone suddenly appears in their eye line or accidentally bumps them while they sleep. Begin to pair gently getting their attention (a soft tap on their back) with a favorite treat.

  3. Keep your deaf dog safe by equipping them with a well-fitted harness and long leash. This will give them the freedom to explore while keeping them safely on leash as you build your communication.
